Thing 12-15

I have to work on Thing 13 ALA connect.

I have a twitter and facebook account. My library has a twitter and facebook account. With facebook all the worlds get mixed up your personal and professional. It is a great tool. I am and was concerned about privacy but I think in the past few weeks with this course I have become more adventurous.

Chat feels so much from the past- but I do notice it being used really well from customer service point.

I have a LibraryThing and recently I joined GoodReads too. Though intially I started with Shelfari and was very happy. Then Shelfari did something and I have a hard time logging to my account and that has discouraged me from going back to it

  1. Yes indeed, that's a big concern - combining the professional with the personal. It seems librarians younger than me (I'm 36) don't mind that meshing of the worlds. While I'm on FB myself and am friends with colleagues, I'm definitely not posting anything inappropriate so it doesn't concern me too too much. But several women I work with have made themselves 'unsearchable' on FB so that we at work can't find them. : )

And chatting via IM does seem so 2000s. I have chatted a few times in Google while working on a project with others, but that's about it. But I think chat for customer service, as you mentioned, is good. I've used it a few times at Lands End - very helpful!

  2. Another thing about Facebook is sifting through posts and sensing, knowing and understanding different ways it is used. I have been observing how family, colleagues and friends use it.
